We caught up with the amazing Gillian Newman, who is currently killing it as Producer over at R/GA London. Having fallen into the creative industry, Gillian has found her calling and  is now responsible for producing campaigns for some of the biggest global brands.


Are you currently working on a personal project?

I'm writing my first article for publication. It's completely out of my comfort zone. I don't often share my thoughts so widely with other people. But it's good because it's pushing me to achieve something that I can look back on. Personal projects are great because it guarantees you are working on something you truly care about.

Have you always wanted to work in the creative industry? If yes, can you tell us why? If not, how did you land your current position?

No, not at all! I didn't think I was the creative time. I got my job completely by chance, after university. I applied to work in an industry I didn't I 100% fit the the bill from (coming from a Politics degree and no creative experience whatsoever).

What has been your biggest achievement to date and why?

I think the best is yet to come from me...

What would you describe as you biggest obstacle so far?

Being taken seriously. I'm young, black, female, small in stature. I worry I give the impression of being a bit of a deer in headlights. More recently, I've learn to completely turns this on it’s head and use it to propel myself and make myself stand out.

Taking a lighter note what and who inspires your creative process?

I'm inspired mostly, by day-to-day life and seeing how we can weave creativity into the things we do day in and out. I'm forever questions, how do we make this more exciting? How do we share this with more people? How can we concept things in a way everyone understands and appreciates? I find myself continually asking these questions and making sure they sponsor my way of working.

What three tips would you give your younger self?

Ask questions, get things wrong, and learn from it.

What words of wisdom do you have for other creatives?

There is no such thing as a bad idea. You shouldn't have to sell your ideas either. The right person will see the vision you have.

If you had the opportunity to get a message across to a large group of people, what would you message be?

Working in a creative industry is the chance, to constantly reinvent yourself through your work. It keeps your mind ticking and it keeps you fresh. Which makes work fun.

What legacy would you like to leave behind?

A catalog of beautifully executed work.
